Already the most powerful man in France, Maximilien Robespierre denounces and executes all his rivals, determined to become Dictator. But François Barras refuses to nominate him before the National Convention and goes into hiding.
Meanwhile, patriot Charles D'Aubigny is sent by the exiled Marquis de Lafayette to kill and impersonate Douval, bloodstained prosecutor of Strasbourg, who had been summoned to Paris by Robespierre. D'Aubigny learns that Robespierre’s black book, containing the names of those he intends to denounce and have executed, has been stolen. Should the names become known, Robespierre's hold on France will be broken; he gives D'Aubigny supreme authority and 24 hours to retrieve the book.
D'Aubigny meets Barras through his sole contact, Madelein, whom D'Aubigny once loved. But Barras reveals that he does not have the book, nor does anyone in his party. Who has the book? What names does it contain? Will Robespierre become Dictator, or will France escape the bloody Reign of Terror?
