An ordinary girl of fourteen, Paradine has been living in the miserable village of Medford for the past ten years. Her stepfather is abusive to her and frequently physically abusive to her gentle mother. She is not allowed to make friends or spend time with classmates. However, this all changes when her grandmother comes to take them away from Medford. When she is taken to Quincannon Derry, she learns that nothing or nobody is ordinary there.
