Colonel Anne Mackintosh, Scotland's 'Beautiful Rebel'

ByJean Mackintosh Goldstrom

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Lady Anne Mackintosh, 23-year old wife of Clan Mackintosh's chief, believed strongly that the Stuarts should be Scotland's kings. When Prince Charles came to claim his throne in 1743, she backed his campaign. Her husband, the Chief of Clan Mackintosh, backed the English King, not the Stuart Prince. War broke out. Lady Anne raised Clan Mackintosh for the Prince -- 800 fighting men desperately needed by the Prince for his army. Any man who raised a regiment, in those days, was called "Colonel." As a result, Lady Anne became known as "Colonel Anne," to all except Prince Charles. In his native French, he called her "La Belle Rebelle," the beautiful rebel.
