“Memom’s Diary” is a compilation of Katherine Harvey Rogér’s memoirs. Her unique perspective emerges through her struggles and joys as a wife, mother, writer, artist, and historian during 1928 and WWII. Her ancestral history is interspersed throughout the book with early photographs, newspaper clippings from her scrapbooks. Katherine Harvey, (or “Memom”) hand-recorded her father's, Horace H. Harvey, spoken memories. He grew up in the Harvey Castle in the mid 1800s and built a life influenced by his father, Capt. Joseph Hale Harvey, and mother, Louise Destrehan of the Destrehan Plantation. Horace Harvey played a major role in developing the Harvey Canal into the Intracoastal Waterway it is today. From his accomplishments, New Orleans, thus Louisiana, experienced an important growth in industry and commerce. What began in the 1720s, shortly after the founding of New Orleans as a drainage ditch is today a vital link in the expansive Intracoastal Canal system.
