Most books for probability and statistics have examples that are not directly translatable to military applications. In general, that may not be important. However, if you are a military practitioner, military application of the subject is very important. This volume has incorporated 39 military vignettes that are used throughout the book, applied to different aspects of probability and statistics for engineers and analysts. Although the mathematical approach is prevalent, many of the vignette examples are analyzed using R programming as well. It may come as a surprise that many of our present-day advanced technology were born out of their need in national defense, including ground, air, sea, and space. For instance, personal computers arose from World War II and the problems of breaking the German Enigma machine code and the subsequent need for space exploration. This historical warfare event was the subject of the film, the Imitation Game. One item that many readers are familiar with is the lubricant called WD40. What you may not realize is that WD40 is the 40th version of a water displacement (WD) formula for preserving missiles located in remote silos. Additionally, many medical advancements arose from the treatment of traumatic injuries incurred in combat.
