Tomorrow is the first day of my senior and last year at Suranaree High School in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, and I am rushing to finish this booklet of Some of My Art Work at the urging of my mentor, my Dad, to be part of my college application later this year. It’s the only one I will make under the early decision system, hoping to get me into this highly competitive place. I already know a lot about it, and love it. My math skills are not quite up there to become mechanical, aeronautical and civil engineers like my brothers. I am more of an artist anyway, fluent in Thai with a reasonable command of German and, of course, English.
I've often been asked why I want to study the Arts, but the truth is, I don't have a single simple answer. Art seems to run in my family: my grandma in Germany was a painter and a pianist, and we all play the piano. On my Dad’s side, my great grandfather’s was a well-known painter and professor at the University of Hamburg.
I spent three years in Southwest Germany between the ages of 13 – 17, only a few miles from Alsace, the most eastern department of France, where we visited often, shopping pour les légumes, les fromages, et bien sûr les vins rouges. I chose French as my major in grades 10 to 12, as if my affection for everything French was the result...
Upon review of my drawings I agree that they are all still lifes: scenery and animals with no human figures. While this might be a coincidence, I have to admit that it could also be an excuse. Perhaps I'm simply too shy and introverted to explore, study, and create accurate depictions of people, which is much more challenging than painting a colourful rooster. To start, I plan to experiment with caricatures, like my little sister does, and work my way up to more realistic drawings and paintings as I keep on learning.
