A relatively short novel that chronicles the actions of twelve-year-old Johanna Flee, a seemingly normal pre-adolescent trying to survive the oppressive world of 6th grade until one night, a stranger appears in her room with a mission for her of the utmost importance. She happens to belong to an elite secret society called Jumpers which is made up of some of the greatest literary characters of all time such as Robin Hood. This society is headed over by the Father of English Literature himself, Geoffrey Chaucer. Before Johanna knows it, she is scooped out of her seemingly pitiful existence and thrust into a world where she must assume the key roles in such famous stories as The Velveteen Rabbit, and A Christmas Carol. Johanna's task is to make sure the stories play out like they are supposed to, in hopes that one day the world will once again realize the value of books and the important role they play in our culture.
