Leonardo Ciampa's well-researched and imaginative reconstruction of Johannes Brahms's last opus, his sublime Chorale Preludes for organ. Composed not long after Clara Schumann's death, and not long before his own death, they are a fitting "last will and testament" from one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. Includes a new setting of Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen, composed by Leonardo Ciampa in the style of Brahms, based on a sketch by Brahms. Includes a thorough preface giving the entire history of Brahms's choral preludes. Several scholars believe that Brahms intended to publish not 11 but 14 choral preludes. The edition of the new Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen and O Traurigkeit (if counted as two pieces) brings the total to the desired 14. The 14 words are presented in the order that it is believed that Brahms intended.
