The 53rd Illinois Infantry was organized at Ottawa, Ill., January, 1862. Moved to Chicago, Ill., February 27, 1862, and duty there until March 23, guarding prisoners. Moved to St. Louis, Mo., thence to Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., March 23-April 7.
The regiment fought at Shiloh, Hatchie's Bridge, Vicksburg, the March to the Sea, the Carolinas campaign, and Bentonville. After the war ended, it participated in the Grand Review of the Armies before being mustered out of service.
The Regiment lost during service 8 Officers and 80 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 137 Enlisted men by disease. Total 227.
