JRW: Wu Shih Shan Affair

JRW: John Richard Wolfe was born in 1832 in the townland of Mallavonea, near Skibbereen, Co. Cork, Ireland. He was the second son of farmer Richard Wolfe and Susan Croston, a Church of Ireland family. John followed a religious path early in his life being a Scripture Reader for the Irish Church Mission. He then trained as a missionary with the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S) in England and was assigned to Foochow in South China. He landed there in 1862 and successfully pursued his missionary work until he died in 1915. John married and had six children. He was made Archdeacon in 1887 and Vice-President of the C.M.S in 1910. We have produced a number of books that give an insight into aspects of his work and his family. This book contains accounts of the “Wu-Shih-Shan” affair and trial of 1879.
