John Howe was an English Puritan minister and writer born in 1630. He was known for his powerful preaching and writing on biblical topics, and was widely respected in his time for his theological insights. Howe was raised in a Puritan family and received a rigorous education, studying at Cambridge University. After graduation, he became a minister and quickly gained a reputation for his sermons, which were known for their deep understanding of the Bible and their practical application to daily life. One of his most famous works is “The Living Temple,” a treatise on the nature of God and the importance of worshiping Him. In it, Howe argued that God should be worshiped not only in heaven, but also in our hearts and in the world around us. He believed that the natural world was a “living temple” that reflected the glory of God and that it was our duty to venerate Him through our interactions with it. Howe was a strong advocate of the Puritan cause, and was involved in several controversies during the political and religious upheavals of the 17th century. Despite opposition from some quarters, he remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to preach and write on behalf of his faith. In addition to “The Living Temple,” Howe also wrote several other works, including “The Redeemer’s Tears Wept Over Lost Souls” and “A Cloud of Witnesses.” These works, like his sermons, were characterized by their deep biblical knowledge and their practical applications to daily life. Overall, John Howe was an influential figure in the Puritan tradition, and his writings continue to be widely read and respected by Christians of all denominations today. His emphasis on the importance of worshiping God in all aspects of life and his commitment to the Puritan cause make him an important figure in the history of English Christianity.
