Marty Milliman's story is a lesson in the resilience of children. Throughout human history there has been war resulting from adult ambitions and disagreements which victimize innocent children; we have not yet found a way to live without war, maybe we never will. Besides war there are also natural disasters, insane behavior by individual suicide bombers, mentally ill armed children who turn guns on other children, and too many other causes of terrible suffering by those we should know how to spare. The good news is that children can mentally survive deprivation without special treatment. This is an important lesson because across the world, every day, the Martha Michalek’s are exposed to suffering for which, if they are lucky, they will get some medical treatment and perhaps a little food before they return to what may be left of their family.
