Paradise Lost is an epic poem by the seventeenth century poet John Milton. The poem contains the rise of Satan through the fall of man with the temptation of Eve by Lucifer. Milton’s purpose is stated in the first book, “to justify the ways of God to men.” It is the lucid conflict of God’s eternal foresight and the free-will of man.
