NIGHT PEOPLE and Other Tales of Working New York - Preface by noted historian Paul Buhle.
NIGHT PEOPLE is a collection unashamed to be called ‘contemporary proletarian literature’. The energy and emotions within these stories are of the people, the workers who make the City run. But this book’s scope also reaches into the asphalt itself as well as the mountains above--heralding the pulse of the land mass beneath us, both oracle and protagonist.
Night People speaks of those who labor on or struggle with joblessness, those who strive toward artistic goals or advocate for others, those who face challenges of conscience and those simply of the streets. It brings to life the people who provide the soundtrack, the city's color and breadth: the people who thrive or perish in New York’s wake. Here then is a love song to reality, mourning the anguish and championing the everyday.
--John Pietaro is a writer, poet, musician and activist. He served in social services during the AIDS crisis before spending 20 years within New York's labor movement. These days, Pietaro is back on the front, working in mental health settings as a case manager. He also fronts neo-beat, punk-jazz ensemble the Red Microphone.
At some point Pietaro plans to create an updated edition of this book to stand with his other titles Smoke Rings (2019), The Mercer Stands Burning (2020), A Bleeding in Black Leather (2022), and Innocent Postcards (2024). www.JohnPietaro.com
