The Vampyre; A Tale is considered to be the first work of modern vampire literature. The gothic horror story was originally published, without permission and attributed to Lord Byron, in the British New Monthly Magazine in 1819, against the wishes and repeated complaints of both authors. It is the story of the bloodthirsty Lord Ruthven, a character often compared to Lord Byron himself.
Born in London in 1795, doctor and author John Polidori traveled with Lord Byron as his personal physician in 1816 (the “Year Without a Summer”), during which time “The Vampyre” was written. Polidori died in London in 1821 at the age of 25.
