1774, Ireland - The lonely highways are the hunting grounds for robbers and thieves who strike both the rich and the poor, the mighty and the lowly. While nineteen-year-old Arthur Thornridge has held his commission since he was a boy, he has finally joined his regiment to serve King and Country. He leaves the soft comforts of home and enters a gritty world where gentlemen and charlatans are often one in the same. Posted to Dublin, his career is nearly over before it begins when a fist-fight breaks out with another officer. Thornridge's colonel decides to see if there are, in fact, any redeeming qualities in the young man. He sends him on a mission to an isolated Irish village terrorized by a notorious highwayman. With only a handful of demoralized men and no experience of his own, he will have to rely on his own wits and judgment if he is to save not only his future, but also his very life.
