The church of the first century, or the Apostolic Age, possesses a peculiar interest for Christians of all denominations, since it constitutes the first and by far the most important chapter in its history, and is the common mother of Catholicism and Protestantism, though materially differing from both. History of the Church: The First 100 Years is based on the multi-volume History of the Christian Church by church historian Philip Schaff, yet presents the information without the footnotes, lists of source of information, and other data that historical scholars require. While that information is important to scholars, it merely clutters the page for the reader. First published in 1858, many consider History of the Early Church to be one of the best histories of the church ever written.
