The Definitive Clark Tale

Janet Stack is a bright, ambitious writer for the Clark College Explorer. Her new roommate is Natasha Jewmockten is a curly-topped corn-fed beauty hailing from Gnaw Bone, Indiana. No two women could possibly be more divergent, but, thrown together in the dame dorm by circumstance, they become fast friends. Nat soon experiences a recurring dream every night of a long, lit white hall of doors, a great white dog, and a looming, growing darkness that both beckons and threatens. She confides in Janet about her somnambulent peregrinations and is surprised to learn that she is having the same dreams. The girls wonder what could be causing such an awful thing. Darin Tarlace is a retired English professor. He, too, is seeing these strange images in his dreams. A spate of unexplained deaths suggest a serial killer is stalking Clark College, and Tarlace believes the two are somehow related. Darin is haunted by a disquieting, undeniable sense that his destiny is inexorably connected to Nat and Janet--and one more as well: a mysterious fourth, a darkness that resides at the periphery of all their shared consciences... a person, yet not really a person, who is responsible for both the murders and these terrible nightmares. And, if that isn't enough, Tarlace reveals that there are others who share this "destiny", all spokes joined at the hub of fate's great wheel. Set against the background of a Southern university in the year 2000--a year lost in the sands of time to some and lying beyond the memories of those not even born then, who are now entering college--this novel looks with wistful nostalgia to the days where Bill Clinton was still this nation's President. It takes us back to a time pre-Covid where the only global bug we worried would kill us all was called "Y2K". It takes us back to an era predating #MeToo, one of frank, roiling sexuality, back when Jeffrey Epstein was still hosting parties for his pals on his private island, Harvey Weinstein was still making motion pictures, Brett Kavenaugh was a rising young attorney with his days of red cups and The "Rump Pump" Express long behind him, and the big names in the news were "Kato Kaelin", "Heidi Fleiss", "Monica Lewinsky", "Mary Kay LeTourneau", and that hooker who gobbled Hugh Grant's knob up on Hollywood's Sunset Blvd. And yet it is a time where secrets and sickness lie within. The waters of the past are warm and pristine; come, swim, but beware! Dark eddies of truth wait to suck you in.
