Original translation from Russian of Anatoly Koni's "Remembrances of a Judicial Activist," published in 1910. He offers a first hand description of many of the famous cases he worked in the second half of the 19th century, many of which defined the new Russian judicial system that was created in 1862 by Tsar Alexander II. Koni was a contemporary of Dostoevsky and helped influence Dostoevsky's later thoughts on "Russian justice." Both witty and intelligent, Koni's works have unfortunately been minimally translated into English. As a prominent judicial scholar, Koni and his works offer insight into an evolving judicial system and the trials and tribulations that lie therein.
