Scale Morphology

Scale Morphology

ByJose Garcia

In Florida, we live in an area where we receive direct sun light for more than 50% of the year. Because of this factor, we can make use of natural light to inhance a building’s performance. For my design I looked at patterns found on the skin of reptiles. Reptiles, can use their skin to regulate temperature. They achieve this process because of the way their scale’s shape and size. Where the sun hits directly, the scales are larger and thicker. However, whrere the sun’s contact is minimal, scales are smaller, thinner and softer. I plan to use the sun’s path as the guide for my facade design. Since sun light and facades relationship is optimal it is important to perform a sun studies and create a relationship between sun and building. This facade shapes on my design will change depending on location and the way that the sun hits them.
