Diary of an Urban Child

ByJosephina Ferrer

Diary of an Urban Child is a compilation of essays, poems, and blog entries spanning a period of 20 years. Almost Josephina is a Nuyorican Writer | Editor | Marketing Director | Exile Survivor. I was born and raised in the East and Southside neighborhoods of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My mother was a stay at home mom and my dad worked at a carton printing company. My siblings and I grew up in a crowded but comfy two bedroom apartment snuggled between the dividing line of East and South Williamsburg called Lorimer and Union Avenues. We were educated by the New York City school system but mostly by the tenacity of "la vieja escuela". It was a rough neighborhood. Not at all like the Williamsburg of today with its pricey lofts, tree lined streets, coffee bars and sushi restaurants. It was a dirty, stinky neighborhood with weeds growing from the cracks in the cement and empty lots full of trash and burnt cars. It was home. It was what we knew.
