This publication provides the reader with complete election results of all the major electoral events held in the American territory of Puerto Rico since 1899 to 2008. Puerto Rico has been an American territory since 1898 and has held elections since 1899. Puerto Ricans are American citizens since 1917. The biggest issue in Puerto Rican politics is the issue of its political relationship with the United States (also referred to as "political status" or "status" in daily discussions in Puerto Rico). The division is between those who want to make Puerto Rico a state of the US, those who want to stay as a territory, and those who want some form of independence (full independence or in association with the United States).
