Author: Justinas Bonaventūra Pranaitis Editor: David MacNeill Text translation: E. N. Sanctuary; David MacNeill Cover illustration: The priests take counsel with the Herodians, Alexandre Bida, 2 January 1875 This work by Reverend Father Justinas Bonaventura Panaitis, a Lithuanian Roman Catholic Priest and Scholar, is perhaps one of the first works of its type from a Catholic perspective, looking at what the Talmud and other works of post-temple Judaism say about the Lord Jesus Christ, but more generally - Christians. Although this text has been criticised and dismissed as an ‘antisemitic’ work by modern scholars, perhaps in light of the change in attitude towards Judaism and indeed Jewish Culture of the Talmud since the second world war, I hope to clarify and contextualise what was originally published, as well as expand on it. This thoroughly cited work based on texts still available in the 19th century explores the religious and social aspects of European Jewry leading up to the time of its authorship, and indeed the Jewish attitude towards their Christian contemporaries.
