Eugen Schulte, was 24 years old in 1935, employed as a clerk by Ferrostaal AG in Essen, Germany, when he shipped out to Ecuador, to work in his company’s offices there for four years. He traveled on the S.S. Albert Ballin from Hamburg to New York and the S.S. Santa Clara from New York to Ecuador, via Jamaica and the Panama Canal. His diary and letters record the first-time traveler's impressions of that journey.
