A long lost collection compels a daughter to create a compilation from over 100 letters saved by her grandmother from her only son, Clark DuBard, before and during the Korean War. Clark served on the USSFDR Aircraft Carrier in Communications. Leaving home at the age of 16 from a small Georgia town at the suggestion of a best friend, he finds himself without his family and friends and trades the hard work, which was necessary after the depression destroyed his father’s business to what he thought would be an easier job and pathway to college by enlisting.
Clark obviously shows the love of family, southern traditions and the development from a teenager to a man with intellect and humor. The title almost became Write Soon because Clark asks so many times over the years that it reminds us that the individuals serving our country need to hear from friends and loved ones. We don’t realize how important a letter becomes to someone stationed far from home. Aside from giving my family a treasure, this will hopefully give others insight into a seaman’s daily life in the late 1940’s and a little laugh.
