Painting at Night: An Artist/Mother Exhibition, 2022

Artist/Mother Podcast and Collar Works are excited to present the third annual Painting at Night exhibition, juried this year by Judith Braun, herself an artist, mother and grandmother. The exhibition’s title originated in reaction to a New York Times article stating “You can’t paint at night in your kitchen and hope to be a good artist.” Well, juror Judith Braun replies: “The Artist/Mother Podcast community is here to poke a hole in that myth, I mean, stupid statement. Not only has the Covid-19 pandemic proven that all serious artists will work wherever they can, but great art has always come from difficult circumstances. The authenticity and soul of any endeavor is born out of the drive and desire to express oneself against all odds. I don’t for one minute believe that kids and kitchen tables are hurdles artists who are mothers cannot jump. Mothers have their hands and hearts and heads full, but they are the pioneers of making it work.” This show is a selection of the outstanding submissions that prove that point. There were themes that coelesed, like humor, talisman, domesticity, materials, systems, and self-awareness, to name a few, but it was a sense of resilience, transcendence, and a moment of arrival, that carried work over the finish line.
