In September 1527, the 36-year-old philandering, bullying, profane, and frankly dangerous, King Henry VIII of England, and his super-rich best-friend and Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, dispatched Sir William Knight, an almost unknown, 52-year-old, weary, Archdeacon of Huntingdon, over the Channel, down through France, across the Alps, and onwards into a turbulent Rome on a diplomatic mission every bit as formidable as recent Brexit negotiations. Once there, Sir William was to deliver a petition to the then Pope, Clement VII, seeking to grant his volatile King a divorce from his Queen, Catherine the Aragonian, on a technicality of Biblical origin. But as sure as eggs were Andalucian hard-boiled, it was never going to be easy – and it wasn’t. This is the little-known, hilarious, and often moving story of Sir William’s involvement in what became known as the King’s Great Matter, from June 1527 until he returned to London in February 1528. Along the way, William becomes fair game for hordes of catapult-carrying French peasant boys, axe-wielding Alpine maniacs, and a conniving conclave of Catholic Cardinals. His heart also becomes a target for arrows, as Cupid’s bow takes aim and unexpectedly embroils William in a love affair his King would have been proud of. This brilliantly told tale combines a plethora of true and imagined events revealing the difficulties, and absurdities (especially the British ones when dealing with its Continental neighbours), coupled with the mundane, and sometimes ridiculous realities of everyday life alongside the sheer excitement, terror, and challenges encountered when undertaking such a long and hazardous journey across the Europe of the 16th Century. You may have read a hundred or more books about Henry VIII and his spat with Rome, but you’ll never have read one like this. “A thoroughly enjoyable read which entertained me for hours.” - Amazon Customer.
