Mapping the Inside Out features Kim Nicolini’s drawings on paper, including a large selection of her signature Pen Noise drawings. A distinctly unique style of drawing, the “noise” Kim creates is a kind of transmission of signals that she channels through her pen as she hones into her subjects. This collection includes Kim’s “Not Nakeds” and “Film Stills.” The “Not Nakeds” feature close-cropped oversized portraits. Kim coined the term “Not Nakeds” when she realized that people present themselves differently when modeling clothed. She reads into the entire character of her models even while just focusing on the face. The “Film Stills” project is influenced heavily by the expressionistic aesthetics and desperate human condition shown so beautifully in the 1940s film noir. These drawings focus on moments of deepest internal conflict, when characters desperately try to carve the possible out of the impossible or are faced with the uncensored reflection of their condition.
