Chief Red Jacket - The Orator

Red Jacket (1758 - 1830), also called Sagoyewatha [Keeper Awake because of his oratorical skills], was a chief of the Senaca Nation in what became Buffalo, New York. His magnificent oratory masked his schemes to maintain his position despite double-dealing against his people’s interests. He was called “Red Jacket” due to the red coats he wore while on the British side during the American Revolution.
