This traditional American folk song has been recorded by among others Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, Tom Waits, Harry Belafonte, Glen Campbell, Bing Crosby, Keith Jarrett, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen. It is of unknown origin though it is said to have originated with French voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River. The song was first published in 1882 and become popular as a sea chanty with sailors by the late 1880s In popular culture its been featured in the film by the same name Shenandoah and Nixon, The Good Shepherd, How the West Was Won and on TV in House of Cards and The Newsroom. It was chosen as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time by the members of the Western Writers of America
