In the world of capitalism, nothing is off-limits in the eyes of corporations. Their end goal is to make money, even if that means capitalizing off of a marginalized community. When it comes to the LGBTQIA+ market, corporations mask their greed by claiming to be allies. Some corporations prove themselves to be legitimate allies, whereas others donate large amounts of money to anti-queer organizations. At what point do these actions pass the line from ethical to unethical? Is there even such a way to be ethical in this realm of capitalism?
The gay market was born in the 1980s and has been growing and evolving ever since. It takes place in advertisements, TV and film, local bars, and live performances. In some ways, this market has been beneficial to the LGBTQIA+ community, however, it has also been very harmful. It is important to be educated on how and why this market is being used so that queer people are not taken advantage of.
LGBTQIA+ acceptance has grown significantly in the past fifty years, but recently, it has taken a turn. The LGBTQIA+ community is under attack. Legislation to suppress and take away queer rights is being proposed and put into law every day. It is crucial to discuss these issues and not let the world erase queer people from existence.
