The SOAP method is a simple way of spending time in God’s word. As we get to know God better and spend more time with Him, we will learn to hear His voice. How it works: Scriptures: After reading a passage of scripture, write it out. If the passage is long, just pick out a few verses that genuinely speak to you and write that down. Observation: As you read the scripture, stop to consider what stands out to you, what you notice, who the audience is, whether you notice anything new, whether there is repetition, whether there are connections or contrasts, and so on. Note down what you notice and what it means to you. Application: In order to apply what you have read to yourself, your life, and your walk with the Lord, ask yourself whether there is anything you need to do or modify. It might not always be anything you need to "do" or "modify," but it might be something you discover about God that alters your perception of Him or that you wish to incorporate into your acts of devotion toward God. Put into writing how you'll use what you've discovered. Prayer: Ask the Lord to show you areas in your life where you can apply these principles you learned, and ask him to support you while you do so. Your prayers may include praise, gratitude, confession, or requests for assistance in carrying out certain actions.
