Name Your Poison: A Max Mitchum Mystery

Name Your Poison: A Max Mitchum Mystery

ByLucas Stensland

Inspired by vintage dime novels, Name Your Poison revises genre conventions to plant evidence at the scene of the crime: Modern American life. Seen through the drunken eyes of Max Mitchum, private detective, the book assembles a crass menagerie of losers, users, and abusers–topped off with a little Dewar’s. Investigating the alleged suicide of Angelina, the college-age daughter of the mysterious and sensual Cynthia Clarksdale, Mitchum gets distracted by whisky, Cynthia’s lips, Goth culture, lesbians, Star Trek fandom, a woman who smells like gasoline, whisky, a telemarketing box-salesman, quilting techniques, a guy named Johnny Pickles, expensive chocolate and whisky. More likely to stumble across a pool of vomit than a pool of blood, Max Mitchum is a long way from the archetypal P.I., and Name Your Poison is a far cry from high art. In fact, it’s so far from highbrow, let’s call it a total dive.
