Light from the East - VOLUME II: August 1951 - November 1954

Light from the East was the first official periodical of the Church of the East. It appeared in Chicago in November 1948 under the direction of Patriarch Mar Eshai Shimun. Following the tragic events of August 1933, Mar Shimun was exiled from Iraq. In 1941, he settled among the Assyrians in Chicago. Starting with the first issue, Light from the East documents Mar Shimun’s new political policy which encouraged Assyrians to be loyal citizens of the countries in which they lived. Along with articles about church news, history and culture, Light from the East contains very interesting articles on events of the period, such as attempts to establish a branch of the Church of the East in Japan and notices denouncing the alleged actions of Yusuf Malek in connection with Kurdish unrest and attempts to find a homeland for Assyrians in Brazil. Volume II of this complete reprint contains 20 issues from August 1951 to November 1954.
