This month I was metaphorically, if not literally, blown away by Andy Player’s Scalextric ‘Spark Plug’ feature. I’m not a technophobe – you wouldn’t be reading this if I was – but I’m the first to admit that I’m a below average digital racer at best. It might be something to do with teaching an old dog new tricks (especially if the old dog wasn’t that bright in the first place), but I must admit I do struggle. For Andy to be driving a car with a mobile phone was a lot to get my head around. I just know I’d sit on the start line taking pictures of my hand while everyone else disappeared into the distance. Seriously, considering Scalextric’s efforts to bring new blood into the hobby with systems such as this and ‘Scalextric Funday Sunday’ being advertised at Gaydon this year, the company is clearly serious about targeting that market. I have a feeling that this could be a very important year for Hornby Hobbies and Scalextric. Plus, of course, there's loads of other stuff to read and gawk at.
