Unity

Unity is a piece for any number of violists, who perform while walking very slowly around a circular score with a diameter of ten feet. The score contains a single continuous staff. This piece is meditative, revolving around phrases that arc in and out against a drone on middle C, and since the performers are always moving, it also produces a visual choreography like a slow dance. As a large circular score, Unity is intended to be read by players both on the inside and outside of the circle. This is an adventurous, interesting, but also broadly appealing piece of new music that would be eminently suited for a studio recital, viola party, or other settings such as an art show opening.
