Principles of corrosion 1.1 What is corrosion? Corrosion is a process where materials deteriorate as a result of a reaction between them and/or their surrounding environment. The materials we most widely use in construction are iron and steel, which are subject to corrosion. In order to prolong the service life of steel and iron and the equipment fabricated from these materials we should have a basic knowledge of the corrosion mechanism and what causes corrosion.
