Milan Kundera's legacy is synonymous with the triumph of Humanity over oppression; and bringing about Freedom, Passion and Humor.
Milan Kundera's social-critical masterpiece 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' encompasses passion and philosophy, infidelity and ideas, the Prague Spring and modern America, political acts and private desires, comedy and tragedy - in fact, all of human existence.
Tomáš, a Czech surgeon and intellectual, is the protagonist of the story. He writes a politically dangerous article, using the tale of Oedipus to criticize the Czech communists; comparing the Czech Communists to Oedipus.
Like Oedipus, the Communists claim they did not know what they were doing, and could not foresee the consequences of their actions. Unlike Oedipus, however, the Communists use their ignorance to absolve themselves of guilt, and remain in power. Tomas praises Oedipus for accepting responsibility for his actions, and faults the Communists for using lack of knowledge to explain away wrongdoing.
Eventually fed up with life in Prague under the Communist regime, Tomáš and his young wife Tereza move to the countryside. He abandons his twin obsessions of work and womanizing and discovers true happiness with Tereza. His epitaph, written by his Catholic son, is "He Wanted the Kingdom of God on Earth".
In the words of Milan Kundera: “To be a writer does not mean to preach a truth, it means to discover a Truth.”
This applies very much to the current situation in Europe - namely Putin's inhuman war on Ukraine.
In my opinion, the most tragic failing of today's Russia is that even though Russia is a highly intellectualized society, Russia has regressed into the dark cave of a military dictatorship - where writers, activists and opposition leaders are persecuted, and Freedom and Liberty are no more.
Freedom of Speech must be restored in Russia - so that writers, journalists, academics and activists can speak their mind, and be allowed to participate in shaping Russia's future.
We call on the People to restore Peace and Diplomacy between Russia and Ukraine. ☮️🇺🇳🇺🇦🤝🇷🇺🕊️
