Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - the weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Its publication ensured Hemingway's place as a writer of great stature. The title of the book was taken from a 16th‑century poem of the same name by the poet George Peele: "A Farewell to Arms." Mark ODoherty was born 1976 in Vienna, Austria and grew up in South Africa where he lives. He is the author of several books in the fields of peacebuilding, social science, law, ethics, philosophy and humor.
