Healing the International Community - Upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in the Global Community
Makenson Rémy: ‘We must stay positive. Haiti is fundamentally good and has a lot of potential.’
Dear Global Citizens,
The UN warns that the chaos engulfing Haiti has become so total and the social fabric so torn, that the country is collapsing.
Ruthless gangs have a stranglehold on the city, preying on the population, carving neighborhoods into warring criminal fiefdoms, attacking the government, prisons and police stations - threatening a civil war.
To prevent humanitarian disaster, it is imperative that the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) and Intelligence Community (IC) restore International Law, Security and Child Rights (UNCRC) in Haiti.
“In 20 years of working in Haiti, we have never seen something like this,” said Fiammetta Cappellini, country representative for the Avsi Foundation. “Violence is everywhere and touches everybody. The most vulnerable people are literally struggling to survive as humanitarian aid is failing to reach people.”
Violence has mounted following the assassination of president Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 when criminal gangs – many of which have links to politicians – exploited a power vacuum to seize more ground.
The country is also experiencing its worst hunger in history.
A record 4.7 million people in Haiti are facing acute hunger, with 1.8 million now at an emergency level of malnutrition.
Malnutrition has long been rife in Port-au-Prince’s slums, but the paralysis of the country by gangs has caused hunger to reach life-or-death levels.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged the Global Community to act swiftly and decisively to prevent Haiti's further descent into chaos.
“This situation is beyond untenable for the people of Haiti,” the Human Rights Chief said. “Since the beginning of the year, a staggering 1,193 people have been killed, and 692 others injured by gang violence.
The health system is on the brink of collapse. Hospitals often do not have the capacity to treat those arriving with gunshots wounds. Schools and business are closed, and children are increasingly used by gangs."
This includes bringing criminals and armed gangs to Justice, by the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, US Intelligence Community and MI6 - so that Rule of Law, the UDHR and UNCRC can be restored in Haiti.
