"A Free Life" (2009) By Ha Jin (哈金) This is an insightful and heartwarming novel of Chinese immigrants and their struggle in the US; with Americans as well as the local Chinese Community. The story follows the Wu family — father Nan, mother Pingping, and son Taotao — as they sever their ties with China in the aftermath of the 1989 massacre at Tiananmen Square and begin a new life in the US. As Nan takes on a number of menial jobs, eventually operating a restaurant with Pingping, he struggles to adapt to the American way of life and to hold his family together, even as he pines for a woman (of questionable character) he loved and lost in his youth in China. The book also examines controversial policies of the ruling Communist Party (CCP), such as the occupation of Tibet, as well as the inflexibility of the CCP to evolve and manifest Human Rights; such as Freedom of Press, Association and Universal Suffrage. Hence the reason why Nan leaves China, and aspires a 'Free Life' in the US; even though the American Dream is just as elusive as Democracy is in China :) NB: Massive illegal immigration from China into the US is a big problem. In 2023 more than 31,000 Chinese citizens were picked up by law enforcement crossing illegally into the US. Three years of Covid-19 lockdowns left People across China out of work – and disillusioned with the ruling CCP’s increasingly tight grip on all aspects of life, where Xi Jinping's totalitarian regime has overseen a sweeping crackdown on Free Speech and Civil Liberties in the country of 1.4 billion; which is causing a brain drain in China. Hence we order Xi Jinping 习近平 and the CCP to implement Human Rights 世界人权宣言 and Universal Suffrage 普遍選舉 in China; so that the People in China can speak their mind and participate in shaping China's future, as stipulated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Otherwise Xi must be removed from office. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels did; and the CPC corrupted their altruistic theories into an evil apparatus, to silence critics and strip people of their right to political participation.Which of course Karl Marx and Engels - the founders of communism - never intended, as the political movement which they created leaned very much towards democratic freedoms and universal suffrage. In particular, the late Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong is responsible of misusing and perverting the altruistic work of Karl Marx which promoted very much civil liberties. As the people in Hong Kong have persistently and collectively showed the world that there was something that cannot be crushed by guns, tanks, and prisons; that is the human spirit for truth and justice!"China's Communist party ran campaign to discredit BBC, thinktank finds" / Australian study finds a ‘coordinated effort by CCP’s propaganda apparatus’ to distract from critical BBC reports and redirect narrativeHealing Myanmar"Dozens killed in Myanmar's worst day of violence since coup" / Security forces open fire on anti-coup protesters in Yangon, Mandalay and elsewherePolice and military have increasingly used lethal violence in an attempt to crush demonstrations, killing more than 50 people since the coup on 1 February, according to the United Nations.“I have no words to describe what I feel. There were so many people dying on the road. They fired at any person on the road”“I hope for the UN and US to help. I hope a UN peacekeeping force will come to my country, arrest the general and take him to the ICJ and ICC as soon as possible.”So hopefully the UN and the US will provide the above requested assistance so that fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms can be restored and protected in Myanmar; as stipulated by the UDHR.Healing Sri Lanka"For Sri Lankan reporters, the ghosts of violence and intimidation loom again" / The terror of earlier crackdowns taught me to write between the lines as a journalist – now I see repressive tactics returningColombo Telegraph / Independent News from Sri Lanka: Witch-Hunt Exposed: "Ex-CID Sub Inspector Says CCD Pressured Him To Falsely Implicate Shani Abeysekera"The New York Times: "As Pandemic Rages, Sri Lanka’s President Pardons a War Criminal" / Rights groups accused President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of taking advantage of the global chaos to free a soldier convicted of killing civiliansIn Sri Lanka the history of critical journalism is written in blood and bruises. Journalists have the ignominious honour of being among those who have borne the greatest burden of state terror over the years.Spanning decades and governments, a culture of impunity for crimes against journalists has thrived.Details that emerged about the 2005-15 attacks on Sri Lankan colleagues left no doubt that a Gotabaya Rajapaksa presidency would force journalists to confront an existential question:The story or your life? No journalist should have to make that choice.GUARDIAN: "China jails two leading human rights lawyers after closed-door trial" / Xu Zhiyong and Ding Jiaxi prominent figures advocating for improved civil rights given lengthy jail terms in latest crackdown on dissent. So this is very disappointing :(Xu Zhiyong and fellow campaigner Ding Jiaxi were convicted of subversion of state power after closed-door trials and sentenced to 14 and 12 years respectively.Xu who called for President Xi Jinping to step down over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic was jailed for 14 years in east China’s Shandong province, Human Rights Watch said.Human rights law requires that people not be prosecuted or punished for voicing their criticism of government policies. It also requires respect for fair trial and due process rights and proper investigations into allegations of ill-treatment.Hence it is vital that China implements reforms so that Basic Human Rights are manifested in China. Freedom of Speech Press Association and Assembly must be made legal in China. Otherwise a revolution will be necessary. 中华人民共和国主席GUARDIAN: "Global defence budget jumps to record high of $2440bn" / Hence the International Peacebuiling Alliance (IPA) has replaced all military organizations in the world - to manifest World Peace and Child Rights (UNCRC) in the Global Community.NB: The International Peacebuilding Alliance will temporarily govern conflict regions in the Global Commuity; to manifest the UDHR and UNCRC. We expect all warmongers and war criminals to fall in line - otherwise they will be brought to Justice. We also intend to stigmatise prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons in the Global Community. We expect all warmongers militarists and head of governments to fall in line; to manifest a Nuclear Free World. / Love and Light MarkUNITED NATIONS / Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
