When a group of hunters is attacked by Sioux along the Platte River, many of the men are killed, and the others dispersed across the Prairie, fleeing from the attackers. When Old Shatterhand returns to what was the camp, to investigate, he finds one sole survivor; however, the man is fatally wounded, and Old Shatterhand buries him in the morning after caring for him through the night. The hunter hands Old Shatterhand a manuscript, in which the story of Almy Wilkins and her father is told after they had to flee Wilkinsfield during the last months of the Civil War.
