The Library

The Whittard was one of the oldest institutions in the University although one of the least known to all but the select handful of scholars of magic and mythology it admitted as readers each year. It was independent of the authorities, Darke’s fiefdom, the nearest thing he had ever had to a home. Over the long years of guarding its inner secrets he had grown apart from a world he had never been allowed to be part of because of what he was. Before he took a walk outside the grounds one cold evening early in the new academic year the Librarian had come to believe that for him nothing would ever change. He didn’t realise how quickly the threat to his Library was growing; help would come from unlikely sources but the price of saving it might be the loss of something far more valuable.
