Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
In 1577 Martin Chemnitz wrote a response to forty-one anonymous theses published by the Secret Sacramentarians of Wittenberg. Nicholas Selnecker republished this work in 1581, and Herman Hachfeld did the same in 1865. The translator’s preface and historical introduction show the pedigree of these two editions and the history surrounding the work itself. This annotated translation brings Chemnitz’s work to a new generation with aids from the editions of both Selnecker and Hachfeld, including a translation of Hachfeld’s own historical preface. Written the year before Two Natures in Christ was published, Chemnitz’s treatise offers further insight into his christology, but since Chemnitz delves deeper into the omnipresence of Christ’s human nature within this work, this work offers a clearer picture of his christology specifically in regard to how he answers the ubiquity question differently than Luther and other orthodox Lutheran theologians. Chemnitz’s treatment of the ubiquity question in distinction to these other other theologians is analyzed, and the difference between Chemnitz and others over the omnipresence of Christ’s human nature is used to offer insight in dealing with theological topics where difference in language or even confession does not necessitate the severing of theological fellowship.
