As part of the Russian diaspora, Eugene Yourieff’s family fled the Bolsheviks in Russia in the 1920s and the Japanese in China in the 1930s,only for Gene to become their prisoner when Japan invaded Hong Kong in 1941. In peacetime, he was businessman, and a Superintendent in the Marine Division of the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force. Also an avid yachtsman, Gene was an honorary life member of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and its longest standing member at the time of his death. Several of Gene’s closest family members had direct personal connections with some of the most fascinating characters of the twentieth century. Their stories and those of others close to Gene are an integral part of this book.
