"Edward Fenner, Ancestor" depicts the life of a Puritan who settled in what is now Weymouth, MA. In this historical novel, Mary Bates Rhodes portrays one of her ancestors, a Townsman of Weymouth and Elder of the Church for more than thirty years. The novel follows his decision to leave England and describes his experiences in the New World, incorporating historical figures, conflicts, ideas, and acts and decisions by both the British Crown and the Massachusetts Bay leadership. The author highlights love, joy, sorrow, tragedy, birth, and death and describes the lives and thoughts of early colonists. She displays a subtle understanding of human development and colonial history. Her descriptions of how opinions change over years and generations provide insight into the development of our nation. She does not excuse the Puritan treatment of others (Native Americans, Quakers, Baptists, and Roman Catholics), but portrays the early Puritan mindset and beliefs in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
