I Went to the Sea for Oranges is the true story (a memoir) of a young girl, Nellis McBroom, living in a small town in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900's. At an early age she aspires to experience "all the pleasure and all the pain" that life has to offer. Her determination to attend a prestigious eastern college, to travel, and to be independent, at a time when it is not easy for women to do so, leads her to a life of romance and tragedy. Yet, she manages to achieve as many of her goals as one can expect in the short span of a lifetime.
