How the Holy Fathers prayed – and how they in turn teach us to pray – is seen in this book, that is less known, by Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain, the author of Unseen Warfare, A Handbook of Spiritual Counsel, the editor of Philokalia, and of Evergetinos, and many other books of deep spiritual foundation, and who is venerated by the Orthodox Church on July 14. The Prayers of the Holy Fathers is part of a collection of texts that was published in 1799 in Constantinople by the Patriarchy Publishing House, with the title Apanthisma (Gr. for “A Bouquet of Flowers”). Apanthisma was – and remains – a book of canonical teachings, but also for simple reading or study, for those interested in Orthodox spirituality or those who are interested to learn about Eastern Christianity , a privileged introduction into a world of intellectual creation and of inner life that is rarely encountered nowadays.
