In December 2024, whilst fierce fighting engulfed the Gaza Strip in response to the atrocities of October 7th, the Houthis in Yemen were launching rockets at Israel and Southern Lebanon was under fire, Matt Pointon decided to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. A pilgrimage with a difference. Inspired by walking the Camino de Santiago across Spain, he became the first Englishman to walk the Way to Jerusalem, a 111km pilgrimage route from Jaffa on the coast to the Holy City. Walking with two Jews and a Muslim, talking to Palestinians and Israelis, Christians, Muslims and Jews, he walked to show that pilgrimage is about the conversations with strangers on the road, and that hatred and bloodshed can always be overcome by love.
