A fictional war in a parallel, somewhat medieval world is the backdrop for an intentionally myopic perspective designed to highlight the struggles of three central characters. Rex and Calvin, the two kings of a vast empire that stretches over most of the world, are vying for supremacy; Calvin’s wife Amaranth, queen of the rebellion against their brutal rule, is attempting to reunite herself with her estranged husband. The escalation of the tension is quick, with Calvin discovering a new execution device and then Rex, for fear of the royal couple unseating him, conniving his way into planting Calvin firmly in it. While Rex and Amaranth continue to fight a bloody six-year long war that threatens to endanger them, as well as the millions of surrounding people under their control, Calvin plots a strategy to exact revenge upon Rex from beyond the grave.
